Promising practices

From January to July 2013, BBC Media Action travelled to Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to visit many of the projects working to create demand for voluntary medical male circumcision. The purpose of these visits was to document the experiences and lessons learned from initiatives that were working well and to identify promising approaches that other programmes might want to adapt.

A number of the projects documented by BBC Media Action were presented at the Eastern and Southern Regional Meeting on Demand Creation for Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision in Lusaka, Zambia, 3-5 April 2013.

The selection of initiatives described here is by no means exhaustive, but it includes projects considered to represent “promising practices” because they had one or more of following qualities:

  • Project design is based on a well-defined problem statement and a clear understanding of the target audience.

  • There is robust evidence that the project is delivering results and a clear articulation of why it is succeeding.

  • The project contains innovative elements or new approaches.

  • There is strong collaboration with other implementers engaged in demand creation.

BBC Media Action was unable to visit every project. To submit reports, case studies, and other resources to the Clearinghouse, e-mail the webmaster.
