Client Education Materials

The materials below were created for clients and potential clients of voluntary medical male circumcision programmes in a number of African countries. These pamphlets, mini-booklets, and client brochures are intended for use as educational materials for those interested in the male circumcision procedure. The materials provide information about the risks and limitations for men who are considering the procedure; important questions to consider for men both before and after undergoing the procedure; how women can support their male partners; and the precautions that men should take to ensure good health.

This 20-page booklet from Kenya provides post-operative care instructions to clients as well as additional HIV prevention messaging.

Male circumcision: what it means for Namibia's men and women pamphlet (2011, PDF, 1.35 MB)
This pamphlet from Namibia targets wives or girlfriends of prospective male circumcision clients and discusses the benefits and risks of the procedure. It is availalbe in several languages:

Post-operative leaflet/pamphlet for clients - Swahili (2011, PDF, 283 KB)
This two-page post-operative leaflet proivdes care instructions and messages to abstain from sex for six weeks, as well as a reminder of the partial protective effect of male circumcision to clients in Tanzania.

This brief Q & A pamphlet, authored by contributors in Swaziland, provides information to women about male circumcision, what it means for them as sexual partners, and how they can support their partner, should he decide to undergo circumcision.

Male circumcision information booklet for women (2009, PDF, 425 KB)
This booklet, authored by contributors in Zambia, is intended for women as sexual partners, and for parents to improve their understanding of the risks, benefits, and limitations of male circumcision for both men and women. The booklet also explains how a woman can best support her sexual partner if he decides to undergo circumcision, and emphasises the importance of safer sex practices after the procedure.

Male circumcision info booklet (2009, PDF, 469 KB)
This basic information booklet, authored by contributors in Zambia, answers the principal questions about male circumcision. While intended for men thinking about the procedure, the booklet can also be used for parents and women to improve their understanding of the risks, benefits, and limitations of circumcision.

Male circumcision take-home booklet (2009, PDF, 384 KB)
This booklet, authored by contributors in Zambia, highlights the importance of the six-week wait period and post-operative safer sex behaviours. The booklet is intended for clients who have just undergone circumcision, and for parents to help them understand what precautions should be observed to ensure good health during the recovery period.

Moses comic journey (2009, PDF, 2.71 MB)
This comic strip, which was authored by contributors in Zambia, focuses on Moses, a young man who is interested in learning more about male circumcision. The storyline follows Moses' journey from curiosity to post-operative behaviour, and responds to the prinicipal questions about circumcision by providing a realistic model for other young men interested in MC.

Male circumcision flip chart (2009, PDF, 1.79 MB)
This tool for male circumcision counselors was created by contributors in Zambia, and is used to guide counselling sessions with men, parents, and women. It provides an overview of the MC process, answers clients' questions about risks, benefits, and limitations of the procedure, and addresses important information about post-operative behaviours.

Mini-booklet about safe male circumcision (2009, JPG, 114 KB)
This mini-booklet, created by contributors in Botswana, is aimed at men who are interested in being circumcised. It has been distributed at public and private health facilities, HIV voluntary counselling and testing clinics and offices, within male-dominated sectors (e.g., army, police, fire stations, and correctional facilities) and community-based organisations.


Male circumcision client brochures

These client brochures, created by contributors in Zimbabwe and Botswana, are aimed at men who will soon undergo the safe male circumcision procedure, or those who have already been circumcised. They explain what men need to know before and after circumcision.
