The first issue of this quarterly newsletter describes the progress made and lessons learned during the first year of Kenya's voluntary medical male circumcision programme. The government began this national initiative in Nyanza, where it is coordinated by a provincial task force on male circumcision for HIV prevention.

Study Report

At the Cutting Edge: Delivering Male Circumcision through Marie Stopes' Reproductive Health Mobile Outreach Programmes in Kenya (PDF, 156 KB)
A study that followed 240 men and boys who received male circumcision services at Marie Stopes Kenya's outreach sites in eight districts in western Kenya found a low rate of side effects (1.3 percent) and high rates of client satisfaction (99 percent).

Training Health Care Teams in Scaling-Up Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention in Africa
This report describes a 6-12 July 2009 workshop that prepared public health professionals from Israel and Senegal to work together to help provide male circumcision services and train service providers to perform the procedure in priority countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

PEPFAR Male Circumcision Partners' Meeting: Commodities and Improved Coordination of Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention
This report describes a 19-20 May 2009 meeting that brought together PEPFAR partners working in male circumcision to share experiences and recommend solutions for commodity and procurement issues that constrain male circumcision scale-up. Some of the presentations given at the meeting are also available.

The Clearinghouse on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention is a global resource centre designed to expand access to information and resources on male circumcision for HIV prevention. It is supported by a grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
