EIMC safe and acceptable in Uganda

The results of a randomised controlled trial, published in BJU International, show that early infant male circumcision (EIMC) can be performed safely in rural Uganda, Medical Xpress reports. In the trial, 256 male infants were circumcised by clinical officers and 245 were circumcised by registered nurse midwives at four rural health centres. The rates of complications were low, at 2.4 percent for clinical officers and 1.6 percent for registered nurse midwives, and almost 100 percent of the mothers reported being satisfied with the procedure. The safety of the procedures performed by registered nurse midwives is important because, as the authors of the study write in the journal article, these providers are in direct contact with mothers during pregnancy and delivery (Medical Xpress, 7 September 2016).
