Mobilising men in Nyanza

In an effort to fight against HIV, men in Kenya’s Nyanza Province are embracing a cultural practice that was foreign to their forefathers, reports an article on The Global Fund website. Since 2008, more than 1 million men and boys have become circumcised – most of them in Nyanza – through the National AIDS and STI Programme’s voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programme. The article profiles a woman who works as a mobiliser, traveling through Siaya County to promote VMMC and the comprehensive HIV prevention services provided along with the procedure. Modeling studies show that for each medical male circumcision performed today, an estimated 5 to 15 new infections will be averted by 2030 (The Global Fund, July 2016).
