"Triggers" for VMMC in Botswana

The Clearninghouse on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention is moving to the new Global HIV Prevention Coalition’s Resource Hub. The protective effect of male circumcision against HIV may not be men’s main motivation for choosing the procedure, suggest the results of a qualitative study conducted in four communities in Botswana. The more immediate benefits of VMMC — improved cleanliness, increased sexual pleasure, perceived greater attractiveness to women, and desire to fit in with a peer group — appeared to play a greater role in men’s VMMC decisions. The authors of this article, published online in the journal AIDS Care, describe the implications for demand creation strategies in Botswana (AIDS Care, 11 January 2016).
