Uganda's HIV progress report

The number of men opting to become circumcised was one of the few indicators of progress against HIV that did not show substantial gains in Uganda in the past year, New Vision reports. A new report covering July 2015 to June 2016 shows that the number of Ugandans who became infected with HIV dropped to 83,000, down from 95,000 in the previous 12 months. HIV infections among children and AIDS-related deaths also fell, and more than half of the 1.5 million people living with HIV were accessing antiretroviral therapy. However, only 344,555 men were circumcised under Uganda’s Safe Male Circumcision programme during the reporting period, compared to the 878,109 who were circumcised during the previous 12 months (New Vision, 1 September 2016).
