The sixth chapter of the 2018 Manual for Male Circumcision under Local Anaethesia offers guidance on educating and counselling clients and potential clients about voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC). Among the topics addressed in this chapter are the roles and content of group education and individual counselling VMMC services; the skills required to educate and counsel clients on VMMC services, including HIV testing and prevention; the unique needs of adolescents, including age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health messages; encouraging, but not mandating, an HIV test before the procedure; maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of male circumcision clients; considerations for facilities or providers offering both conventional and device-based methods; and obtaining informed consent from clients.
