New HIV diagnoses among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) declined by more than 25 percent in just over a year in most of the districts and communities served by the DREAMS Partnership, PEPFAR reports. This report summarises the progress made in the first 13 months of the PEPFAR-led partnership to help girls in areas with a high burden of HIV in 15 African countries develop into Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe women. It describes the DREAMS approach, which is to focus on AGYW but also support HIV prevention and treatment for young men and work with other PEPFAR-funded interventions, including voluntary medical male circumcision programmes, to reduce the HIV risk of young women’s sex partners.
