Makerere University Walter Reed Project

Makerere University Walter Reed Project

The Makerere University Walter Reed Project began activities to create demand for safe male circumcision (SMC) during its pilot phase, through community-based health education talks and promotion by community mobilisers. Interest in SMC and uptake were very high during the pilot. The subsequent mobilisation campaign employed radio, billboards, posters, community mobilisers, and peer educators. The project sensitised political, religious, and cultural leaders and addressed fears about a religious agenda underlying the programme and other myths about SMC. This case study is one of the promising practices in VMMC documented by BBC Media Action in 2013.
