Commissioned by the World Health Organisation Reproductive Health and Research Department, this case study deals with the practice of, and policies governing, male circumcision. It provides background on the history and practice of traditional male circumcision among the Xhosa in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, describes current practices, outlines the social and cultural issues, and documents the Government of South Africa's steps to provide legislation to regulate the practice.
