WHO Informal Consultation on Tetanus and Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision: Meeting Report

The deliberations and recommendations of an expert consultation on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) and tetanus are summarized in this report. Convened by the World Health Organization after nine cases of tetanus, including six deaths, were reported from 2012 to 2014 as part of ongoing safety monitoring of VMMC programmes, the experts provided detailed recommendations for minimizing the risk of tetanus among VMMC clients through vaccination and a series of clean care procedures during and after male circumcision.
