"Science is clear," says former first lady

Namibia’s former first lady urged all men in Namibia to become circumcised as an additional strategy for preventing HIV, The Namibian reports. Speaking at a World AIDS Day event in the Oshana region, Penehupifo Pohamb is quoted as saying that “the science is very clear” about the effectiveness of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC). Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services has developed a strategy with the goal of circumcising 300,128 men by 2017. Oshana’s programme aims to provide VMMC services to 8,000 men per year, but last year only 4,534 men in the region became circumcised (The Namibian, 7 December 2015).
