Penile Anaerobic Dysbiosis as a Risk Factor for HIV Infection

Researchers conducted a case-control study among uncircumcised men in Uganda to determine whether particular penile microbiomes are associated with increased risk of HIV infection. Their results, published in the journal mBio, suggest that modifying the penile biome could reduce HIV acquisition in both men and women.
