Progress in Scaling up Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention in East and Southern Africa, January–December 2011

Nearly all national programmes in 14 priority countries had in place the key elements for scale-up of voluntary medical male circumcision by the end of 2011, a year when most of the countries more than doubled the number of procedures performed. However, this WHO/UNAIDS update reports that the 1.4 million men reached by these programmes represents about 7 percent of the total of 20 million male circumcisions needed to achieve significant public health impact.
