About 11 million voluntary medical male circumcisions (VMMCs) were performed in 15 priority countries in eastern and southern Africa from 2016 to 2018, with 4.1 million men and boys opting to become circumcised in 2018 alone. In UNAIDS’ 2019 Global AIDS Update, a section on VMMC shows progress by country towards the goal of 25 million VMMCs by 2020. It also features efforts to strengthen VMMC demand creation by community mobilisers in Malawi, which helped increase the number of VMMC procedures performed in that country by 20 percent from 2017 to 2018.
